Mitch Carbullido
Senator Ben Nelson, Summer 2003

My experience in D.C. interning for Senator Nelson’s office was amazing and unforgettable. Coming away from the internship, I have a whole new understanding and appreciation of the American political system. It is one thing to study politics in college, but I truly learned a great deal more from direct experience and involvement in the Senate. I loved coming to work every day and working with a great team of people in the office.

Specifically, I worked for the deputy legislative assistant of foreign affairs, defense, homeland security, and veterans’ affairs, which I found to be very interesting. I spent my time doing several different jobs in the office. I researched various issues for the DLA that I was working for and drafted responses to constituent letters. I also drafted a memo to the Senator describing a Veterans’ Affairs bill of which he then chose to cosponsor. In addition, I worked with mail, gave staff-led tours of the Capitol, and answered constituent phone calls.

I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to come to D.C. and intern in the Senate for the summer. I truly had a great time, and I feel like I learned a great deal from the experience. I loved working in the Senate and I loved the city and atmosphere of D.C. After finishing my degree at Creighton in Political Science, I hope to attend law school on the east coast, maybe even in D.C. Eventually, I can definitely see myself returning to D.C. for a career in politics.
