Ashley Lewis
Representative Steve King, Summer 2006

Reach for the stars. Seize every opportunity. Those are just two of the phrases I heard when I interned in Washington, D.C. this summer.

During my time on the Hill, I had many memorable experiences. One of those was attending a joint session of the House and Senate, during which the President of the Republic of Latvia addressed Congress. This was the only time I saw an entire session start-to-finish, and the first time I had seen Speaker Hastert.

I also spent many hours giving Capitol Tours to constituents. Over time, these tours would become very rewarding to me, as I would meet several families from Sioux City, Iowa, where I am currently attending college.

It was during these tours that I realized how fortunate I was to be working on the Hill. I was able to experience our government and live in a city that I had only dreamed about. A city that I had watched every day on television, just longing to be part of. I was able to walk the halls of Congress, to learn and work alongside our nation’s elected representatives.

With the help of the Nebraska Society, I was able to fulfill a lifelong dream. I also met some wonderful people along the way. I am very fortunate to have been given this opportunity. As I was told all summer; in order to achieve your dreams, you must reach for the stars. And seize every opportunity. You’ll be glad you did. I know I am.
