FIRST ANNUAL STATES OF THE BIG X AND BIG XII SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT For the 10th straight year the Nebraska Society of Washington DC hosted a Softball Tournament and this year the challenges we faced were far from normal. We are now in the Big 10 so we added Big 10 schools to the tournament while still hosting Big XII schools and in the end the results were surprising but also familiar. We also faced Debt-Reduction votes on the Hill which required many of the would-be players to have to work instead. Nebraska fielded 3 teams this year but unfortunately none made it very far. Five teams from Big 10 and five teams from the Big XII played in a very hot but clear day at Bolling AFB with the traditional Red, Hot and Blue barbecue being served. To no ones surprise, the two Texas teams, Republic and Aggies played for championship of the Big XII while Illinois easily coasted to the Big 10 championship. The real surprise was that Illinois soundly beat both Texas teams early on and then manhandled Republic in the Big 10/Big XII championship game.
