Thank you to everyone who attended the Congressional Reception on Tuesday, June 9, on the ninth floor of the Hart Senate Office Building. The crowd was our biggest in several years and included all five members of the Nebraska Congressional Delegation, their staffers and our Intern Scholarship Award winners for 2009. Click here for more information on the Intern Program and how to apply for a scholarship. Below are the bios of our 2009 Intern Scholarship Award winners:
David Barmore, of Lexington, is interning with both Congressman Adrian Smith and Senator Mike Johanns this summer. He is a senior political science major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. David is active in student government and his fraternity and serves as president of The Bathtub Dogs, a male a cappella group.
Derek Carson, of Lincoln, is interning with the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research. Derek graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan last month with a degree in history. Derek is an Intelligence Sergeant with the Nebraska Army National Guard who has served a tour in Iraq. Derek is an NCAA Division III All-American in track and field as well as an Academic All-American.
Eric Hamilton, of Omaha, is an intern with Senator Mike Johanns. He will be a senior this fall at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he majors in political science and economics. He is chair of the university publications board, which oversees the Daily Nebraskan, is a member of Mortar Board, and is active in numerous other campus organizations.
Deseree Johnston, of Orchard, is an intern with the U.S. State Department. She graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan in May with a degree in political science. Deseree studied abroad in Cairo, interned for former Senator Hagel, and participated in service-learning projects throughout the world. She is a Truman Scholar, which is a prestigious national award for graduate study in public service. Deseree is a former Cherry Blossom Princess.
Catherine “C.J." Koozer, of Hastings, is interning with the U.S. State Department as well. C.J. will be a senior this fall at Nebraska Wesleyan, where she is majoring in biology. She organized her own statewide public health project in Nebraska. C.J. was also recently awarded the prestigious Truman Scholarship for further study in government and public service.
Derek Schardt, of Wayne, is an intern for Congressman Jeff Fortenberry. Derek is majoring in political science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he will be a senior this fall. Derek is an honors student and an officer in his fraternity and is active in the 4-H community.
Lauren Steier, from Omaha, is interning for Congressman Lee Terry. Lauren will be a junior at Creighton this fall, where she is majoring in journalism and public relations. She is an officer in her sorority and is active in numerous campus organizations and represented Nebraska at the American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation.
Katlin Geyer, from Lincoln, is interning with Senator Ben Nelson. A junior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Kate is majoring in history and political science. She is on the Scarlet Dance Team and is active in student government and her sorority.
