On November 14, 2006, a warm and welcoming group of Nebraskans and friends gathered at the Washington D.C. offices of the American Trucking Associations to honor a truly distinguished Nebraskan, Mr. Duane Acklie, with the 2006 Distinguished Nebraskan Award.

Mr. Acklie is a native of Madison County, Nebraska and resides with his wife Phyl in Lincoln, Nebraska. He is a graduate of the University of Nebraska Lincoln with both B.S. and J.D. degrees.

His business affiliations include Chairman of Crete Carrier Corp. and Bank First. Prior to that appointment he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sallie Mae. Mr. Acklie has served on numerous corporate and charitable boards and presently serves as a member of the Nebraska State Highway Commission. His awards include the USO Civic Achievement Award and the U.S. Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service.

Mr. Acklie was introduced by his friend and former U.S. Trade Representative and Secretary of Agriculture, Mr. Clayton Yeutter. The entire Nebraska Congressional Delegation was in attendance and shared their own personal stories and memories of Mr. Acklie. Secretary for Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson and Congressman-Elect Adrian Smith also attended the event, along with numerous other public officials, Nebraska Society members and guests.
