1997 Distinguished Nebraskans Award Recipient

The Honorable J. James Exon

During his two terms as governor and three terms in the U.S. Senate, Jim Exon earned great respect for his tough stance on spending, as he tried to “hold the line” on taxes. After becoming the first governor in Nebraska history to serve eight years, Exon took 68 percent of the vote to win his Senate seat. While in the Senate, he served on the Armed Services Committee and helped shape military policy during the final years of the Cold War.
