1990 Distinguished Nebraskans Award Recipient

Virginia Dodd Smith

Virginia Smith was the first woman to represent the Third Congressional District of Nebraska in the U.S. House of Representatives. During her 16-years of service in the House, Smith was a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, and worked to secure funding for rural projects in western Nebraska. Smith was an outspoken opponent of congressional pay raises and refused to accept hers when her efforts to stop the increase failed.
