1985 Distinguished Nebraskans Award Recipients

Lewis W. Lehr and The Honorable Frank B. Morrison

Most every business these days uses the products offered by Lewis Lehr’s company, Minnesota, Mining and Manufacturing, also known as 3M. During his tenure as chief executive officer of 3M from 1974 to 1986, 3M became a Fortune 500 company by developing its valuable health-care services and selling its other innovative products, including its now ubiquitous Post-it notes. Lehr was born in Elgin, Nebraska, and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Frank Morrison served three, two-year terms as Nebraska’s governor from 1961 to 1967, and was the backbone of the Nebraska Democratic Party during much of his public?]service filled life. Morrison became a Democrat during the Great Depression, when his political hero, Senator George Norris, led the way for New Deal programs. During his governorship, Morrison became a close friend of President John F. Kennedy. Later in life, Morrison’s dream of a monument spanning Interstate 80 was realized when The Great Platte River Road Archway Monument opened in 2000.
