Jim Hartung, Lisa D. Rohde and Julie Vollertsen
Lisa Rohde won the silver medal in the 1,000-meter quadruple sculls with coxswain rowing event at the 1984 Olympics held in Los Angeles, California. The United States finished in a time of 3 minutes, 15.57 seconds. Rohde was born in Wakefield, Nebraska, and lived in Hubbard and Lincoln. She now serves as physician in internal medicine at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Jim Hartung won the gold medal in men’s gymnastics at the 1984 Olympics held in Los Angeles, California. The Omaha native became a Nebraska Cornhusker in 1979 and finished his collegiate career with 22 All-America awards and seven NCAA event titles. He still owns the program’s all-around record of 58.55 which he earned in 1981. Hartung is now an assistant coach for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Julie Vollertsen won the silver medal as a hitter for the women’s volleyball team at the 1984 Olympics held in Los Angeles, California. The Palmyra native joined the U.S. national team out of high school, and went on to play professionally for four years in Italy. She was also was also a member of the 1982 bronze-medal-winning team at the world championships.
