1978 Distinguished Nebraskans Award Recipient
s

Pat Fischer and Ron McDole

With a toughness that belied his 5-foot-9-inch frame, Pat Fischer succeeded at every level of football he played, including a 17-year career in the National Football League. The three-time Pro Bowler finished his pro career with 56 interceptions to rank 15th on the NFL’s all-time list, and had played in more games than any other cornerback at the time of his retirement. Fischer was born in St. Edward, Nebraska, played his high-school ball at Westside and starred for the Cornhuskers at the University of Nebraska from 1958-1960.

At 6-foot-3, 250 pounds, Ron McDole earned the nickname “the Dancing Bear” for the nimbleness which allowed him to snag an NFL-record 12 interceptions by a defensive lineman. McDole, after starring for the Nebraska Cornhuskers from 1958-1960, played a season for the Houston Oilers, then spent eight seasons with the Buffalo Bills before finishing his career with the Washington Redskins alongside former NU teammate Pat Fischer.
