1975 Distinguished Nebraskans Award Recipient

Peter Kiewit

Peter Kiewit developed the employee-owned contractor Peter Kiewit Sons Company, which his father founded in 1884, into a Fortune 500 enterprise. Kiewit headed the firm for 55 years until his death in 1979, and during that time was very active in the Omaha community. Kiewit brought the city’s third television station, KETV, onto the air in 1957; and in 1963, he bought the Omaha World-Herald to keep it locally owned. According to Kiewit’s will, the employees bought the paper in 1979.
