Robert S. Devaney and Pack Robert “Bob” Gibson
Bob Devaney transformed Nebraska football into college football’s greatest program upon his retirement from coaching in 1972. Devaney finished with a record of 101-20-2 including eight Big 8 conference titles and consecutive national championships in 1970 and 1971. After passing the coaching reins to his offensive coordinator, Tom Osborne, Devaney continued his duties as athletic director until 1993.
Bob Gibson was the most dominant pitcher in major league baseball during most of his 16-year career. The Omaha native dealt in intimidation, rarely smiling and willing to risk hitting a batter by throwing inside. His 1.12 earned-run average in 1968 stands as the lowest ever during the modern baseball era, and immediately preceded major league baseball’s decision to lower the pitcher’s mound by five inches in 1969.
